That would be my best suggestion too, but might not fit everyone. For 
those courageous enough to fight with mplayer, it would be adviceable to 
take a bit more of courage and also push the patches to upstream 
mplayer, so we can forget about mplayer. That's what happened for xine, 
and there wasn't any bug report with it since then.
